    THE MIAMI DESIGN DISTRICT – 2ND – 7TH DECEMBER 2013

    Wallpaper* Handmade
Wallpaper* Handmade, the groundbreaking exhibition dedicated to the marriage of craftsmanship and design, will make its US debut during Art Basel / DesignMiami this December with several newly commissioned design pieces in collaboration with iconic British car manufacturer Jaguar.

The exhibition, now in its fourth year, is traditionally hosted by Wallpaper* magazine during Milan Design Week in April. Acting as patron, client and creative director, Wallpaper* commissions designers, artists, craftsmen, makers, brands and manufacturers to create unique and one-off items of furniture, fittings, fashion and more. For this much anticipated exhibition, Wallpaper* has again teamed up with Jaguar to present a curated selection of the best Handmade pieces from the past four years
Now, for the first time, Wallpaper* Handmade will be shown in the US. Around 50 works from some of the world’s leading designers, artists and brands, all previously commissioned by Wallpaper* editors for the exhibition, will be on display in the heart of Miami’s Design District.

The exhibition will also exclusively introduce, for the first time in the US, five new collaborations between Jaguar and designers Fredrikson Stallard, Moritz Waldemeyer, Mathieu Gustafsson, architects Neri & Hu and marble specialist Salvatori. The five new concept products, each representing an avant-garde take on Jaguar’s contemporary design, creativity and technology, have been commissioned by Wallpaper* especially for the exhibition.

The exhibition presents the unique and personal vision of the Hilton Brothers Christopher Makos + Paul Solberg as seen in their celebrity portraits of Andy Warhol, Ai Weiwei, Pedro Almodovar, Tom Ford, Debbie Harry, Lou Reed, Steve Tyler, Georgia O’Keefe, Dylan McDermott, Liza Minnelli, Chris Reeve & others.

    Art Britannia
The exhibition showcases the very best of British contemporary art. The show will feature established mid-career artists as well as young emerging talent, who have already been represented in important shows and collections, such as the recent ‘New Order’ show at the Saatchi Gallery. British art resists condensing down to a few, yet this exhibition aims to deliver a range of work that captures key aspects of artistic practices currently in the UK, acknowledging the role of painting in contemporary practice. The sub-title of the show is a ‘special relationship’ as it points to the Anglo/American friendship and ‘hands across the ocean’, but also the special relationship between artworks that co-exist and at times compete within a space.

TAPAS. Spanish Design for Food, organized and produced by Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) –a public body tasked with showcasing and promoting Spain’s culture and heritage at home and abroad– explores the interaction between design and cuisine –two creative disciplines that are experiencing a boom in Spain and are establishing a major international profile. TAPASshowcases Spanish design adapted to gastronomy through more than 200 objects and instruments used in the preparation or tasting of food, from the more traditional to the most cutting-edge, and through videos and photographs. It is a spectacle of imagination and talent at the service of the sense of taste.

Curated by the designer and architect Juli Capella, TAPAS gives us a foretaste of design’s varied contributions to cuisine through three spaces: Kitchen –preparation and its utensils; Table –the objects for sampling the food- and Eating –the actual food design.

Now celebrating its 15th year of exhibiting experimental contemporary art, Locust Projects is pleased to present Intethe (Sketch for an Opera), South African sculptor Nicholas Hlobo’s first major project in Miami. Hlobo is known for sprawling sculptures whose organic forms seem to tumble and unfold through the exhibition space. The installation will incorporate these large-scale leather sculptures into a multifaceted performance space and video installation. For the first time, he will collaborate with Miami-based Haitian band Papaloko and Loray Mistik on a sketch for an opera entitled Intethe (“Locust” in the Xhosa language), exploring notions of shared identity throughout the global African diaspora.

Cassina, the only authorized company to manufacture the furniture designed by Charlotte Perriand, celebrates this exceptional collaboration with a preview of the travelling exhibition of the architect’s photography at the Cassina Miami showroom during Design Miami/Art Basel Miami Beach 2013. The photographic memories are an insight into her passion for architecture, nature and humanity discovered during her travels: all constant themes in her works.  A selection of furniture designs by Perriand- manufactured by Cassina- will be displayed along with the photography exhibit.  An inspired installation in collaboration with Louis Vuitton will underline this Perriand homage.

Cassina will also participate in Louis Vuitton’s authentic to-scale reconstruction of the Maison au Bord de l’Eau, designed by Perriand in 1934, which will be on show in the spectacular setting of Miami Beach during Design Miami/ and Art Basel.

    Berluti
Berluti presents four unique pieces by designer Maarten Baas.  One valet, two mirrors and a chaise longue, all created and developed in collaboration with, and for, the Berluti house. The pieces are staged in the Miami store’s two windows. The first window displays the valet – the central piece of the Berluti man’s dressing room – and the two mirrors.  The Clay Fan and the Chaise Longue are displayed in the second window, in reference to Miami’s “dolce farniente” spirit.

Berluti is working with Maarten Baas around their common passion for fun, off-the-wall, handcrafted items.  Objects are hand-modelled in Baas’ unique clay collection, the designer’s exclusive, synthetic resin-based clay, which coats a metal structure giving it round softness.  In reinterpreting these pieces, Maarten Baas is breaking the ground rules regarding classic furniture, with creations that are full of humour and in total sync with Berluti’s sometimes unconventional tone.

    / Artist and Studio Jewelry
This year finds an unparalleled selection of galleries specializing in jewelry, including first time exhibitors Louisa Guinness and Elisabetta Cipriani. Ranging from specially commissioned pieces by visual artists, such as Carlos Cruz Diez, to the output of masters in the studio jewelry field, such as Iris Eichenberg and Margaret De Patta, whose works unite sculptural and architectural elements redolent of the modernist aesthetic, these are works on an intimate scale, often with particular personal significance.

    / Emerging American Designers
The highly diverse work of young American designers on display encompasses everything from the experimental, organically formed ceramics of the Haas Brothers to Sebastian Errazuriz’s meditations on mortality delivered in the form of furnishings rich with funeral pomp. Jonathan Muecke, meanwhile, engages in more formal, philosophical investigations into the nature of products, examining how far form and function can be pushed before an object changes identity. While Jon Stam, recipient of the 2013 WDOF Award, explores abstractions of time and place, depicting bucolic American scenography in his new series of Claude Glass.

Jewels by JAR at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

    Butterfly Brooch 1994 by JAR

    Exhibition Dates:       November 20, 2013–March 9, 2014
Exhibition Location:   Lila Acheson Wallace Wing,
The Helen and Milton A. Kimmelman Gallery, Gallery 913

Jewels by JAR at The Metropolitan Museum of Art will feature more than 400 works by renowned jewelry designer Joel A. Rosenthal, who works in Paris under the name JAR. The exhibition will be the first retrospective in the United States of his work and the first retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum devoted to a contemporary artist of gems.

Jewels by JAR is organized by the Department of Modern and Contemporary Art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The organizing curator is Jane Adlin, Associate Curator in the department.

JAR makes jewels that fulfill an aesthetic rather than commercial ambition. A particular skill of the JAR team is selecting stones for their color compatibility, complementary range, or contrast. Rosenthal, who once said, “we are not afraid of any materials,” uses metals as strong as platinum and as lightweight as aluminum as bases for his designs. He reintroduced the use of silver in fine jewelry making and blackened the metal to enhance the color of the stones and the shine of the diamonds. The color and the shading of his pavé technique became a signature, as did the diamond thread work

The exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue (hardcover $40), published by the Metropolitan Museum and distributed by Yale University Press. This would be a lovely holiday gift for a jewelry enthusiast (like me) !!!

Also, in conjunction with the exhibition, JAR has designed a unique collection of earrings and watches for the Museum, available exclusively at the exhibition and Mezzanine Gallery shops.

    Design Miami 2013 Guide – Part I

Design Miami, the global forum for design, presents the best in collectible design from the world’s most prestigious galleries. For the 2013 edition, Design Miami returns with its largest and most international gallery program to date. Featuring 37 galleries overall – 31 in the main exhibition program and six in the On/Site program for solo exhibitions of new work.

This year’s participants have been invited from 10 different countries, including first time exhibitors from Russia and Lebanon. Design Miami’s gallery selection represents a broad range of specialist areas, from late 19th century art pottery, through masterworks of the mid 20th century to the most exciting developments at the cutting edge of contemporary design.

    / Digital Design
The fascination with the aesthetic tension between old and new is typified by the output of designers such as Maarten Baas, Astrid Krogh, Random International and Humans Since 1982 who utilize contemporary technologies and materials to create works that communicate at a strongly human level. Krogh’s optic fiber tapestries use traditional techniques to otherworldly ends, while Random International’s A Study of Time re-captures importance of light and shadow to the understanding of the passage of time within early civilizations.
