THE MIAMI DESIGN DISTRICT – 2ND – 7TH DECEMBER 2013
Wallpaper* Handmade, the groundbreaking exhibition dedicated to the marriage of craftsmanship and design, will make its US debut during Art Basel / DesignMiami this December with several newly commissioned design pieces in collaboration with iconic British car manufacturer Jaguar.
The exhibition, now in its fourth year, is traditionally hosted by Wallpaper* magazine during Milan Design Week in April. Acting as patron, client and creative director, Wallpaper* commissions designers, artists, craftsmen, makers, brands and manufacturers to create unique and one-off items of furniture, fittings, fashion and more. For this much anticipated exhibition, Wallpaper* has again teamed up with Jaguar to present a curated selection of the best Handmade pieces from the past four years
Now, for the first time, Wallpaper* Handmade will be shown in the US. Around 50 works from some of the world’s leading designers, artists and brands, all previously commissioned by Wallpaper* editors for the exhibition, will be on display in the heart of Miami’s Design District.
The exhibition will also exclusively introduce, for the first time in the US, five new collaborations between Jaguar and designers Fredrikson Stallard, Moritz Waldemeyer, Mathieu Gustafsson, architects Neri & Hu and marble specialist Salvatori. The five new concept products, each representing an avant-garde take on Jaguar’s contemporary design, creativity and technology, have been commissioned by Wallpaper* especially for the exhibition.

The Hilton Brothers + Christopher Makos + Paul Solberg
The exhibition presents the unique and personal vision of the Hilton Brothers Christopher Makos + Paul Solberg as seen in their celebrity portraits of Andy Warhol, Ai Weiwei, Pedro Almodovar, Tom Ford, Debbie Harry, Lou Reed, Steve Tyler, Georgia O’Keefe, Dylan McDermott, Liza Minnelli, Chris Reeve & others.
The exhibition showcases the very best of British contemporary art. The show will feature established mid-career artists as well as young emerging talent, who have already been represented in important shows and collections, such as the recent ‘New Order’ show at the Saatchi Gallery. British art resists condensing down to a few, yet this exhibition aims to deliver a range of work that captures key aspects of artistic practices currently in the UK, acknowledging the role of painting in contemporary practice. The sub-title of the show is a ‘special relationship’ as it points to the Anglo/American friendship and ‘hands across the ocean’, but also the special relationship between artworks that co-exist and at times compete within a space.
TAPAS. Spanish Design for Food, organized and produced by Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) –a public body tasked with showcasing and promoting Spain’s culture and heritage at home and abroad– explores the interaction between design and cuisine –two creative disciplines that are experiencing a boom in Spain and are establishing a major international profile. TAPASshowcases Spanish design adapted to gastronomy through more than 200 objects and instruments used in the preparation or tasting of food, from the more traditional to the most cutting-edge, and through videos and photographs. It is a spectacle of imagination and talent at the service of the sense of taste.
Curated by the designer and architect Juli Capella, TAPAS gives us a foretaste of design’s varied contributions to cuisine through three spaces: Kitchen –preparation and its utensils; Table –the objects for sampling the food- and Eating –the actual food design.
Now celebrating its 15th year of exhibiting experimental contemporary art, Locust Projects is pleased to present Intethe (Sketch for an Opera), South African sculptor Nicholas Hlobo’s first major project in Miami. Hlobo is known for sprawling sculptures whose organic forms seem to tumble and unfold through the exhibition space. The installation will incorporate these large-scale leather sculptures into a multifaceted performance space and video installation. For the first time, he will collaborate with Miami-based Haitian band Papaloko and Loray Mistik on a sketch for an opera entitled Intethe (“Locust” in the Xhosa language), exploring notions of shared identity throughout the global African diaspora.
Cassina Showroom at Poltrona Frau Group Miami
Cassina pays tribute to Charlotte Perriand, a Modernist Pioneer, from Avant-garde Design to Photography
Cassina, the only authorized company to manufacture the furniture designed by Charlotte Perriand, celebrates this exceptional collaboration with a preview of the travelling exhibition of the architect’s photography at the Cassina Miami showroom during Design Miami/Art Basel Miami Beach 2013. The photographic memories are an insight into her passion for architecture, nature and humanity discovered during her travels: all constant themes in her works. A selection of furniture designs by Perriand- manufactured by Cassina- will be displayed along with the photography exhibit. An inspired installation in collaboration with Louis Vuitton will underline this Perriand homage.
Cassina will also participate in Louis Vuitton’s authentic to-scale reconstruction of the Maison au Bord de l’Eau, designed by Perriand in 1934, which will be on show in the spectacular setting of Miami Beach during Design Miami/ and Art Basel.
Berluti presents four unique pieces by designer Maarten Baas. One valet, two mirrors and a chaise longue, all created and developed in collaboration with, and for, the Berluti house. The pieces are staged in the Miami store’s two windows. The first window displays the valet – the central piece of the Berluti man’s dressing room – and the two mirrors. The Clay Fan and the Chaise Longue are displayed in the second window, in reference to Miami’s “dolce farniente” spirit.
Berluti is working with Maarten Baas around their common passion for fun, off-the-wall, handcrafted items. Objects are hand-modelled in Baas’ unique clay collection, the designer’s exclusive, synthetic resin-based clay, which coats a metal structure giving it round softness. In reinterpreting these pieces, Maarten Baas is breaking the ground rules regarding classic furniture, with creations that are full of humour and in total sync with Berluti’s sometimes unconventional tone.
