Fischer Cherry, Fertility

Fertility addresses societal assumptions about fertility in a changing world, where environmental
factors have led to a rise in infertility. Rather than physical attributes of the female form that
have long come to symbolize what it means to be fertile, Cherry has created a modern lexicon for
these associations. The artist juxtaposes objects associated with traditional female gender roles
against an arsenal of the latest fertility treatment medications. The resulting sculpture suggests
an updated and more comprehensive symbol of the reproductive
complexities women and families face today.
