  • Art Basel Miami Beach 2016 Week – Post-Election Funk Casts a Shadow on the Hottest Art Fair Week of the Year

Art Basel Miami Beach 2016 Week – Post-Election Funk Casts a Shadow on the Hottest Art Fair Week of the Year

After a particularly nasty and grueling U.S. election season complete with shocking outcome, I have to admit my usual Art Basel – Miami Beach Week excitement had been smushed a few notches.

As the invites rolled in, I found myself confronting a post-election malaise. I wondered if I should just take a pass this year from the many fabulous contemporary art and design world events and Netflix binge instead, sequestering myself in a dark room hoping that this all was a bad dream.

I am so very glad I did not go down the path of least movement but instead ventured out to commiserate with fellow attendees, exhibitors, designers, curators, artists and journalists at the temporary crossroads of the best in contemporary art and collectible design.

Wherever I went, no matter the happening, event or exhibition, I had the best conversations with complete strangers or people who “knew” me from my social media channels but hadn’t met me in person yet.  I took tons of photos and  some videos (not as much as I would have liked).

While I did not get to see everything I wanted to see, I did see a lot, so stay tuned for upcoming posts!

  • SCAD at Miami Presents Theater of Self featuring Daniel Lismore

SCAD at Miami Presents Theater of Self featuring Daniel Lismore

The use of clothes to define, defend and defy societal conventions is at the center of the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) presents SCAD AT MIAMI – Theater of Self: An Exploration of Identity, featuring works by  Daniel Lismore and photography by SCAD graduate student Bin Feng (M.F.A. Photography) that I previewed last week.

The core of the exhibition is a phalanx of 20 Daniel Lismore life-size mannequins festooned in his spectacularly designed creations that are accompanied by five light boxes of photos of Lismore taken by New York-based photographer Colin Douglas Gray. These five featured looks are also included in Lismore’s upcoming monograph, published by Skira Rizzoli in collaboration with SCAD entitled Daniel Lismore: Be Yourself, Everyone Else Is Already Taken, due out for international release in February 2017.

As I walked around each exciting ensemble, I realized that I could spend hours looking at Daniel Lismore ‘s creations and still not be able to fathom all the intricacies involved in creating them.

Accompanying Limore’s works, Bin Feng’s self-portraits of himself living a stylized version of the  “American Dream” offer profound insights to the subjects of class, race and gender from a non-Western perspective. This inclusion of Feng’s works could not have been more timely as the recent brutal election season has shown that we Americans have vastly different interpretations of what those “dreams” mean as well how we should attain them.

Also included are works from SCAD graduates including exquisite furniture designed Kalin Asenov and Eny Lee Parker,  thrilling paintings by Whitney Wood Bailey and  gorgeous lighting fixtures with embroidered cotton corded shades by April Rivers Locke.

In addition to all this, SCAD AT MIAMI also is showcasing the world’s first ever virtual reality musical “Say It With Music”, produced &* written by Joshua Howard and directed and performed by SCAD students.  Fortunately, Howard was on hand along with SCAD student Lubomir Kocka to walk me through the process of getting set up and viewing this amazing production.

This totally immersive experience was extraordinary – it felt like I was not watching a musical as so much as being a silent participant .  While you will have to go to the exhibition to experience this, you can see a “behind the scenes” look here .

Here are more pics from the exhibition:

  • Mr Ben Brown Made My Day

Mr Ben Brown Made My Day

    This just made my day!!!!!!!!!!!

Mr. Ben Brown is one of my favorite YouTube travel vloggers and yesterday he announced via Snapchat that he would be taking questions for a Snapchat Q&A video. Given that he has thousands of followers and probably would get a ton of questions, I figured I would not make the cut.

So, imagine my joy when I saw myself 3:02 mins into his Snapchat Q&A! My question is pretty serious one for me since I plan on investing in a camera for vlogging at the upcoming Design Miami 2015, Miami Project 2015PULSE Miami Beach 2015, SCOPE Miami Beach 2015 and other satellite fairs and events associated with Art Basel Miami Beach Week 2015.

My budget is very, very limited, so I getting feedback from Mr. Ben Brown, who’s vlogs always look amazing, is more than helpful. I plan on getting the Canon GX-7 and maybe a couple accessories.

    Thank you Mr Ben Brown!

  • Art Basel Miami Beach 2014 Wrap Up

Art Basel Miami Beach 2014 Wrap Up

Art Basel Miami Beach 2014 has wrapped up another successful edition. As their latest press release states:

Art Basel’s 13th edition in Miami Beach closed today, Sunday, December 7, 2014,
amidst strong praise from gallerists, private collectors, museum groups and the
media. Highlights of the show included the introduction of the new Survey sector,
which brought 13 art-historical projects to the fair, including many rare works
never before exhibited in an art fair context; and Art Basel’s staging with Performa
of Ryan McNamara’s ‘MEƎM 4 Miami: A Story Ballet About the Internet’ at the Miami
Grand Theater. Solid sales were reported across all levels of the market and
throughout the run of the show. Featuring 267 leading international galleries from
31 countries, the show – whose Lead Partner is UBS – attracted an attendance of
73,000 over five days. Attendees included representatives of over 160 museum and
institution groups from across the world – and a surging number of new private
collectors from the Americas, Europe and Asia.

Miami Beach’s leading museums and private collections also timed their strongest
shows of the year to coincide with Art Basel in Miami Beach. The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO) presented ‘Impulse, Reason, Sense, Conflict/Abstract Art in the Ella Fontanals-Cisernos Collection’ while the de la Cruz Collection Contemporary Art Space showed ‘Beneath The Surface’. It was a year of anniversaries as The Margulies Collection at the Warehouse marked its 15th anniversary, and the The Rubell Family Collection presenting ’50 Years of Marriage’, celebrating Mera and Don Rubell’s half a century of marriage and collecting.

Design Miami, the leading global forum for collectible design, also celebrated its 10th anniversary and also presented their inaugural Design Visionary/ Award to Peter Marino. See more posts about Design Miami here.

The Pérez Art Museum Miami presented Mario Garcia Torres, Beatriz Milhazes and
Geoffrey Farmer. The Norton Museum of Art presented ‘RAW: Klara Kristalova’, while the Bass Museum of Art showed ‘One Way: Peter Marino’. The NSU Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale showed ‘Café Dolly: Picabia, Schnabel, Willumsen’.

Also, Art Basel and BMW announced a new partnership supporting emerging artists. Starting in 2015, the BMW Art Journey will enable emerging artists to go on a journey of creative discovery to a destination of their choice. Functioning
as a mobile studio, the BMW Art Journey is open to artists from Positions and
Discoveries, Art Basel’s sectors for emerging artists in Miami Beach and Hong Kong. For more information, please visit http://bmw-art-journey.com.
