    Upcoming: Spectrum Miami/Red Dot Miami 2022

    With 150,000 square feet of exhibition space bursting with the works of more than a 1,000 artists, featured at 280+ exhibitors, the only “Two Fairs Under One Roof”, Spectrum Miami and Red Dot Miami promises to be the best edition yet!

    This five-day contemporary art extravaganza including interactive programming takes place November 30th – December 4th at the Mana Wynwood Convention Center located aat 2217 NW 5th Ave. and NW 22nd St in the Wynwood Arts District.

    Featured artists include:

    • Fashion designer Natalia Fedner, exhibiting her chain metal textile dresses, worn by the likes of Beyonce, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Charlize Theron and Kristen Stewart
    • Elephant Parade, an international exhibit of lifesized model elephants, some of which have been designed by Katy Perry, Khloe Kardashian and Max Fleischer to benefit elephant welfare and conservation programs

    Robot Heart Foundation Comes to Art Basel

    The Robot Heart Foundation will host a public art showcase featuring a Brandt Brauer Frick Art installation, entitled “Multi Faith Prayer Room,” at The Annex Miami during Art Basel Dec 1st-3rd.

    “Dance music culture has always served the purpose of bringing people together in almost a post-religious cathedral type setting – the club. A very open space, open to freedom of expression. The idea for ‘Multi Faith Prayer Room’ came about when I was at Heathrow Airport in late 2020,” said Daniel Brandt. “I had always seen signs for Multi Faith Prayer Rooms but this time the term stuck with me. I wanted to create a physical space that brings people together, brings different opinions together, without judgment.” 

    The art showcase, created through a significant grant from the Robot Heart Foundation, will be held over three days; from 3:00pm–8:30pm. It will feature three 30 minute shows at 3:30pm – 4:00pm,  4:30pm – 5:00pm and 5:30pm – 6:00pm. There will also be evening parties, from 7:00pm-8:30pm, with a sold out show featuring Afro House DJ Layla Benitez on November 30th. Shows featuring Brandt Brauer Frick will be on December 1st and West African DJ and producer AMÉMÉ will be performing on December 2nd, and play within the 360 surround sound experience.

    Fresh from their showing at Paris+ in the City of Light this past October, the upcoming 18th edition of Design Miami/ helmed by curatorial director Maria Cristina Didero  arrives at Pride Park across from the Miami Beach Convention Center from November 30 – December 4, 2022.

    Themed The Golden Age: Looking to the Future, the programming this year offers vibrant, thought provoking installations and presentations like a custom hammam that will offer a three-room immersive experience for visitors, Kohler presents Transcendence by Nada Debs, a gorgeous immersive exhibition The Future Orient Express presented by Accor which reveals the designs of their train due to launch in 2025, as well as Miami Design District presents Rock | Roll by Germane Barnes, FENDI presents Triclinium by Lukas Gschwandtner, Maison Perrier-Jouët presents Planted Air by Garance Vallée, Dolce&Gabbana Alta Gioielleria, Grand Seiko presents Journey Through the Nature of Time, USM Modular Furniture presents USM NYC by Ben Ganz, a collaboration with PIN–UP Home, and Panerai Presents: La Merenda d’Oro.

    SPF Fort Lauderdale is one of my favorite events of the year because it brings together everything I love about the printmaking community like sharing ideas and seeing new work from creatives both locally and now internationally !

  • Loss in the Time of Pandemic-8.31.20

    This past Friday evening as I was contemplating how many of the many things I had put aside I was going to try to catch up on during the weekend, my brother calls and says, “Chadwick Boseman died.” So I check my newsfeeds on all my digital devices and there it is – the words confirming the heartbreaking truth that he is gone from us.   

    My cellphone starts chiming, notifications coming in from texts, social media channels, missed calls, voicemails, all proclaiming, all confirming this prince, this king, this force of a man is no longer here.  Then the gut punch – he has been suffering from colon cancer for years, endured surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation all the while he continued to work both onscreen and off. 

    It is a indication of the times that my mother’s reaction is that she is thankful that he was not the victim of a gunshot or some other horrific violent death as too many many men and women of color have been this year.  2020 is the “Annus Horribilis” people of color all across the globe. 

    When ABC announced Saturday that they would be showing his penultimate performance in the superhero movie that changed everything on Sunday, I dressed in the same outfit I wore to see the movie in when it had opened in 2018 with extra helping of “extra-ness” – maximum accessories a la Billy Porter and beat my face to the gods so that even RuPaul would salute me. On the couch, I put a big box of tissues beside me. 

    When it ended I cried, cried big baby tears for this one hurts like I lost a friend.
